Full Canvas vs. Half Canvas vs. Fused: Understanding Suit Construction

MAX SCHMIDT · FOUNDER

You should be the best dressed in any room — and feel completely at ease while doing it.

Max Schmidt has spent over a decade designing custom garments for thousands of clients. What started as a passion for clothing and craftsmanship became a conviction: that every man deserves clothes that actually fit, made from materials worth keeping.

1701 Bespoke is the result. A studio in Detroit that treats every commission as a collaboration — between the client's vision, the tailor's expertise, and the centuries-long tradition of Neapolitan craft.

Our suits are made near Rome and Naples by craftspeople who have spent their careers mastering this work. Our fabrics come from the finest mills in England and Italy — Loro Piana, Zegna, Dormeuil, Ariston — the same houses that supply the world's great tailors.

A fused jacket looks its best the moment you put it on, then spends the next few years negotiating that look away — a little heat, a few trips to the dry cleaner, a couple of real winters, and the glue holding its shape starts to let go. A full canvas jacket works in the opposite direction. Nothing is bonded to anything; the canvas is sewn in, free to move, and it spends years quietly adjusting itself to the exact shape of the body wearing it.

One of these jackets gets better with age. The other starts falling apart the moment you take it off the hanger.

We've seen both ends of that timeline up close, which is why full canvas was never really a question for us. It's not the upgrade on our order form — it's simply how every 1701 Bespoke suit is built, because a suit is a long relationship, and we'd rather build the version that gets better the longer you keep it.

Full Canvas, Half Canvas, or Fused?

Full Canvas

Hand- or machine-stitched to the fabric, never glued, running the full length of the jacket front. Nothing bonds the layers together, so the canvas slowly molds to your body with wear — the only construction that genuinely improves with age. The most durable and the most labor-intensive. Standard on every 1701 Bespoke made-to-measure suit.

Half Canvas

A real sewn canvas covers the chest and lapel — the two places a trained eye actually judges a jacket's shape — while the lower front is fused instead. An honest middle ground: the structure that matters most, built the traditional way, at a lower price than full canvas.

Fused

No sewn canvas at all. A sheet of interlining is glued to the fabric with heat, which is fast, cheap, and crisp right off the rack. The glue can separate with wear, heat, and dry cleaning, leaving the "bubbling" look along the chest that no pressing fixes. It looks its best on day one and never improves — standard for mass-market suits, not something we build a made-to-measure jacket around.

OVERVIEW

The Layer You Never See

← Back to Made to Measure

Two jackets can use the exact same fabric and still feel completely different to wear. The difference is almost never the cloth — it's the canvas, a hidden layer between the shell fabric and the lining that gives a lapel its roll and a chest its shape. How that canvas gets built into the jacket is one of the biggest decisions behind a suit's price, feel, and lifespan, and it's also the one a client is least likely to ask about.

THE VERDICT

Which One Is Right For You

If you're keeping a suit for years, not just a season, full canvas is the only real answer — it's the one construction that gets better, not worse, with wear. Half canvas is a legitimate option at a lower price point, without giving up the two areas that matter most. Fused has its place in fast fashion; it doesn't have one in a made-to-measure suit.

Every 1701 Bespoke made-to-measure suit ships with full canvas construction as the standard, not an upgrade.
